Ukraine: Chernihiv without water, heating and electricity

Extensive damage has left the population of Chernihiv without water, heating or electricity, while Russian forces continue to surround the city in northern Ukraine.

The gas supply is still partially operational, according to yesterday’s announcement of the regional government.

The city’s infrastructure has been destroyed by “intense fighting”, but efforts are under way to repair the damage, regional administration head Vyacheslav Chaus wrote in the Telegram on Saturday.

Russian forces have been encircling Chernihiv in the Ukrainian north for some time. The city’s main road, located near the border with Russia and Belarus, leads to Kyiv.

Vladislav Atroshenko, the mayor, said on Saturday that the city had been “completely destroyed” by Russian forces. He also noted that more than 200 civilians have lost their lives in recent weeks, while more than half of the city’s original 285,000 inhabitants have fled.

Fighting continues across the country, with Russian forces also opening fire on the Neutron Source nuclear test facility in Kharkov, eastern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian media.

The facilities, which had already been damaged by bombing almost two weeks ago and were cut off from the electricity grid, were bombed on Saturday, Ukrayinska Pravda reported, citing the state nuclear authority.

“It is not possible to verify the extent of the damage due to the incessant fighting near the nuclear facilities,” according to the publication.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops launched a successful counterattack around Kharkov, according to the regional head of the Ukrainian military.

“We are repelling the occupying forces in the direction of the (Russian) border,” Oleg Sinegubov told the Telegram on Sunday.

A residential building was damaged, he added, during a Russian airstrike in the village of Oskil in the Izium region, killing a family of four. This information could not be verified by an independent source.

Russian forces are moving to Belarus to rebuild after heavy losses in Ukraine, according to a statement issued yesterday by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The purpose of moving the troops is to “rotate units that have suffered significant losses, strengthen existing teams, replenish food, fuel and ammunition, and organize the evacuation of wounded and sick personnel,” the statement said.

The General Staff also noted last night that the Russian army is preparing for new missile strikes in Ukraine by supplying new missiles to launch bases in Belarus. And this information could not be verified by an independent source.

Meanwhile, fighting continues in Rubizne, Severodonetsk and Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine. The General Staff also announced that the Russian National Guard is trying to quell popular resistance in the occupied territories in the south of the country.

At the same time, according to Moscow, the Russian armed forces destroyed a large fuel depot in Ukraine near the western city of Lviv.

The fuel depot was supplying the Ukrainian army in the western part of the country and near Kyiv, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said yesterday, confirming information provided by Ukraine on Saturday.

Rockets fired from aircraft and warships destroyed various military targets in Lviv and parts of Kiev, the general staff of the Russian Armed Forces also announced.

A fuel depot was hit, Lviv Mayor Andriy Santovi said, adding that there were five casualties, but did not elaborate. No political infrastructure was destroyed. According to the Ukrainian civil protection authorities, the fire caused in the fuel depot could be extinguished after 14 hours yesterday, Sunday.

In the Rivne region of western Ukraine, a fuel depot was also destroyed by Russian missile strikes on Saturday, according to Ukrainian sources. The devastation caused in the city of Dubno was extensive, according to yesterday’s announcement of the regional administration.

A total of 67 military targets were destroyed in a 24-hour period, Konashenkov of Moscow said. Among them were army repair facilities in Lviv, a depot with anti-aircraft missiles 30 kilometers southwest of Kiev and 18 fighter drones. Attacks on Ukraine will continue, Konashenkov said.

The dpa points out that, as is the case with most allegations made by both sides during the war, it has not been possible to verify this information from an independent source.
