Ukraine: Civilian buses from Mariupol and Azovstal arrive in Zaporizhia

More than 170 civilians from Mariupol, including 40 from Azofstal, arrived in Zaporizhia tonight.

The civilians, some of whom were holding small children, got off the white buses carrying them to the parking lot of a shopping mall, which has been turned into a reception area for people fleeing Russian-occupied areas.

Humanitarian workers accompanied some elderly people, including a woman in a wheelchair.

A total of 174 people arrived in eight buses “from the hell of Mariupol,” said Osnat Lubrani, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine.

“With this new operation, more than 600 people have been evacuated from the war zone,” she said in a statement. “Our work, however, is not over,” he continued, assuring that “dozens of people who wanted to join the convoy in recent days have failed to do so.”

On Saturday, Kyiv announced that all women, children and the elderly had been evacuated from Azovstal, the last stronghold of resistance by Ukrainian forces in Mariupol. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the injured and the medical staff should now be evacuated.
