Ukraine will create a cyber army to counter Russian digital attacks, Deputy Prime Minister Mikhail Fedorov said on Saturday.
In this context, he called on the country’s hackers to help protect critical infrastructure and conduct cyber espionage missions against the Russian military, as broadcast exclusively by Reuters last week.
“We are creating a cyber army,” Fedorov wrote in a Twitter post referring to the Telegram messaging app, which published a list of prominent Russian websites. “There will be missions for everyone. We will continue to fight on the cyber front. The first mission is on the channel for cyber experts.”
The Telegram has published a list of websites of 31 major Russian corporations and government agencies, including energy giant Gazprop, Russia’s second-largest oil company Lukoil, three banks and some government websites.
The official website of the Kremlin and the office of Russian President Vladimir Putin (Kremlin.ru) was shut down yesterday Saturday in an apparent DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) cyberattack.
Malicious data scanning software was discovered in Ukraine last week after it hit hundreds of computers, according to researchers at cybersecurity company ESET.
The suspicions turned to Russia, which has been repeatedly accused of cyber-attacks against Ukraine and other countries. Victims include government agencies and financial institutions.
Britain and the United States have said Russian hackers were behind a series of DDoS cyberattacks last week that temporarily shut down Ukrainian banking and government websites before the Russian invasion. Russia has denied the allegations.
