Ukraine ‘crime scene’, according to Hague ICC prosecutor

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the British Karim Khan, described Ukraine as a “crime scene” during his visit today to Bhutsa, near Kyiv.

“Ukraine is a crime scene. We are here because we can reasonably assume that crimes are being committed under the jurisdiction of the Court. We have to go through the fog of war to get to the truth,” the prosecutor told city, where hundreds of civilians, according to Ukrainian authorities, were found dead after the withdrawal of the Russians who had occupied it.

A first report by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) mission sends evidence of a “list of inhumane acts” by Russian troops in Ukraine, including war crimes, the US ambassador to the OSCE said today.

“The report documents the list of inhumane acts committed by Russian forces in Ukraine,” said US Ambassador Michael Carpenter in a statement. “Includes evidence of direct targeting of civilians, attacks on medical facilities, rape, executions, looting and forced deportation of civilians to Russia.”

Meanwhile, the bodies of more than 1,500 Russian soldiers are being laid to rest in the morgue of Dnipro, the largest industrial city in eastern Ukraine, the city’s deputy mayor, Mikhail Lysenko, said today.

“We have more than 1,500 dead Russian soldiers in the Dnipro morgue today, but no one wants to pick them up,” Nastasse Bremia told Russian media, adding that he hoped “Russian mothers their”.
