Ukraine crisis, Macron way: Putin-Biden meeting possible

There is no date, one that seems like a promise on the path of that dialogue that the international chancelleries hope will prevent a military intervention in Ukraine. The French president Emmanuel Macron after a series of phone calls to Moscow and Washington, but also to Kiev and other European capitals, a way seems to have been found: Russian President Putin and the American one Biden they accepted Macron’s proposal for a bilateral summit. The meeting, confirmed only in principle, will then be open to the other parties involved to manage security and strategic stability in Europe.

US Secretary of State Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov should be preparing the meeting in an appointment already set for next Thursday, February 24th. The White House spokesperson confirmed what was reported by the Elysée communiqué specifying that “The summit can only be held if Russia does not invade Ukraine”.

The French president spoke to Russian and Ukrainian president Zelensky about the need to “re-establish the ceasefire” in Donbass, a pro-Russian separatist region in Ukraine. Putin also committed himself to pursuing the diplomatic path, even if Russian military exercises continue on Belarusian territory. According to the Elysée, however, Putin reiterated to Macron “The intention to withdraw troops from Belarus at the end of the ongoing exercises”.

Europe is working tirelessly on the solution diplomatic. However, the US and also the UK seem increasingly convinced that Putin has already made the decision to invade Ukraine.
