Ukraine demands expulsion of Russia from the Council of Europe

The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Smigal today called on the Council of Europe to “immediately expel” Russia from this pan-European human rights body, which, if implemented, will be the first time in its history.

“We call for a decision on the immediate expulsion of Russia from the Council of Europe,” Smegal said at a special session of the Strasbourg-based Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Committee of Ministers, the “executive body” of the Council, will meet on Thursday morning to decide.

Speaking on the sidelines of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Smegal called on the 46 member states of the Council to join forces to defend Ukraine “and the whole of Europe.” “It’s time to end this attack, before there is a nuclear disaster, before the whole of Europe is set on fire,” he said.

The day after the invasion of Ukraine, the Council of Europe decided to suspend Russia’s participation in one of its main bodies, apart from the European Court of Human Rights. Tomorrow night, after its extraordinary meeting (which is the first time in its history) has ended, the Council is expected to adopt a text asking the Committee of Ministers “to call on the Russian Federation to leave its Council. Of Europe “. “It is the strictest measure the organization can take,” its president, Dutchman Tini Cox, told reporters, repeatedly insisting that Russia had “crossed the red line.”

Earlier, however, the Russian news agency RIA reported that the Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was suspending its participation and would not take part in the meetings.
