Ukraine denounces attempt to “de-Ukrainianize” Mariupol by Russians

Russian authorities in control of Mariupol have decided to cancel their summer school holidays in order to prepare the city’s students for the Russian school curriculum, a Ukrainian official said today.

According to Petro Andryuchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian mayor of the city, whose last defenders surrendered in the previous days, “the occupiers announced the extension of the school year until September 1”.

“Throughout the summer the children will take Russian language, Russian history and mathematics lessons in Russian. The main purpose is to democratize and prepare (the students) for their return to school based on the Russian school curriculum,” he said.

Andryutshenko noted, however, that the Russian “conquerors” have not yet been able to find enough teachers, “only 53 teachers for 9 schools.” He did not specify how many students attend these schools.

After a three-month siege that destroyed this city of 500,000 inhabitants, the Russian forces managed to lay down their arms on May 20, the last fighters defending the Azovstal steel plant. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, about 2,500 Ukrainian soldiers of the Azov Order, whom Russia describes as “Nazis”, have surrendered. This number has not been confirmed by Kyiv.
