Ukraine: Despite fierce Russian attack, Ukrainians hold 10% of Luhansk province

Despite heavy attacks from Russia, the Ukrainian army continues to control about a tenth of the Luhansk region, according to the head of local authorities.

Governor Serhiy Haidai said Sunday that Russian forces had not been able to occupy the outskirts of the cities of Rubizne, Severodonetsk and Lisichansk.

Late last week, Moscow claimed that pro-Russian separatists had advanced into Luhansk, with the help of the Russian armed forces. Mr Gaidai dismissed the allegations as “fiction”.

In the Donetsk region, also in eastern Ukraine, three civilians were killed and 13 others wounded in Russian attacks yesterday, authorities said.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, hostilities have focused on the east and south of the country.

The pro-Russian separatists are claiming all the territories of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Danetsk and Luhansk, which were recognized by Moscow as independent state entities just 24 hours before the invasion.
