Ukraine: ‘Difficult negotiations’ to evacuate wounded from Azovstal continue

Tough negotiations continue over the fate of Ukrainian soldiers still trapped at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, said Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the military administration for the Donetsk region.

“Difficult negotiations are underway at this time to save defenders, gradually, because the Russian Federation is trying to dictate its conditions and requirements as much as possible. So, first of all, they will be [retirados os] seriously injured combatants,” he said.

Kyrylenko echoed Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk’s comments that the Ukrainian side would not comment in detail on the process.

“We have to talk about it only when people are safe. Only then will we make comments. Negotiations are ongoing and are really very difficult. Because, first, the Russian Federation always changes them [as condições]. And even everything that is achieved is not 100% agreed with Russia,” she explained.

In the meantime, he continued, the Russians are continuing to attack Avozstal from the air. “These are heavy, vacuum and highly explosive bombs”, pointed out the official.

Vereshchuk has also been talking about the Azovstal negotiations, apparently trying to contain expectations.

“There are no miracles in war. There are harsh realities. So only a sober and pragmatic approach works,” she said on Friday. “The team is working. Negotiations with the enemy are very difficult. The result may not please everyone. But our task is to get our boys out. All. Alive,” said the deputy prime minister.
