The silence of the Serbian political leadership over the developments in Ukraine causes the dissatisfaction of the western countries and the disappointment of Kiev.
The envoys from the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Italy, as well as an EU envoy, will meet today with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in a bid to persuade him to adhere to Brussels policy. Western diplomatic sources, citing Serbian media, say the meeting will send a message to Vucic that the time he had to decide was exhausted and he should take a stand immediately.
The same view was expressed by the Ambassador of Ukraine in Belgrade Oleksandr Alexandrovich, who expressed his disappointment and pointed out that he expects Serbia to express in a strong tone the condemnation of Russia and the support of Ukraine. In an interview with the Serbian television network N1, Alexandrovich said that Ukrainian forces had managed to stop the invasion of Russian ground forces within five kilometers of the border with Belarus. He also said that during the first hours of the invasion, six Russian fighters and two helicopters were shot down, while four tanks were destroyed.
It is noted that a meeting of the National Security Council of Serbia is underway in Belgrade to assess the situation in Ukraine.
President Vuτςiτς announced that he would announce his position on sanctions against Russia tomorrow. Former Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic has expressed the view that Serbia should not succumb to Western pressure and turn its back on Russia.
