Ukraine has begun efforts to restart two reactors at the Russian-held Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, regional commander Oleksandr Starukh said today.
The plant’s sixth reactor is operating at 10 percent of capacity, while the fifth reactor is in the process of restarting, he said, in televised remarks.
“The technicians worked and restored the power supply and now the sixth reactor is at 10% capacity. The fifth is — according to our information — in the process of being restored,” Staruch said.
Meanwhile, a Russian-appointed official in the occupied part of the Zaporizhia region said that Ukrainian forces destroyed the last power line connecting the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant to Ukraine, making it impossible to supply electricity to Ukraine, reports the state news agency TASS.
Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Russian-appointed local administration, said, according to TASS, that the station does not currently provide electricity to Ukraine.
Earlier, the Russian news agency reported, citing the head of the Russian-appointed administration at Enerhodar, where the nuclear power plant is located, that the plant is normally supplying electricity to Ukraine.
According to TASS, this official stated that the station works “without interruption”.
Ukraine’s state-run nuclear power company Energoatom said on Thursday that all six of the plant’s reactors had been disconnected from the country’s power grid, and President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed Russian bombing.
The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, was seized by Russian forces in March. It remains close to the front line and has repeatedly come under fire in recent weeks, prompting fears of a nuclear disaster. Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of bombing the area around the facilities.
Besides, a while ago, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced, in its daily update, that its forces destroyed an American-made M777 howitzer which, as it said, was used by Ukraine to bomb the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the howitzer was destroyed west of the city of Marganets, in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region.
Reuters cannot confirm the information at this time.
