Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear power company, Energoatom, has denied that it could shut down Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Russian-occupied territory if Kyiv loses control of its operation.
Zaporizhia Station is located in southeastern Ukraine. It has been occupied by Russian forces but is still being operated by Ukrainian experts.
The Interfax news agency, citing an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, said the plant could be closed if Kyiv lost control.
In its announcement, however, the company Energoatom emphasizes that the station “can not be closed, from a technical, economic, political point of view” and for security reasons.
Last week, Ukraine’s state-owned network operator rejected as “technically impossible” a proposal by a Russian official who said the plant could generate electricity for Russia.
