Ukraine: Estonian cargo ship sinks off Odessa after explosion – Six sailors rescued

The Estonian-owned cargo ship Helt sank today off the Ukrainian port of Odessa after an explosion, as announced by the ship management company.

Two crew members are in a lifeboat at sea and four others have not been found, Igor Ilves, general manager of the Tallinn-based management company Vista Shipping, told Reuters.

“The boat finally sank,” Ilves said. “Two of the crew members are in a boat at sea and four others are missing. I do not know where they are at the moment.” He said the boat may have been hit by a mine.

Six sailors were rescued

Six sailors from the Estonian cargo ship Helt that sank off the coast of Odessa today after an explosion were collected by the Ukrainian rescue service, as it became known by a Ukrainian official.

Viktor Vishnyov, the deputy chief of staff of the Ukrainian navy, said the six crew members were taken to a hospital in the nearby town of Chernomorsk because they remained in the icy sea for several hours. He did not give further details about their situation.
