Ukraine exports over 1 million tonnes of grain in April, ministry says

Ukraine has sown around 7 million hectares of spring crops so far this year, or 25-30% less than in the corresponding period of 2021, and exported 1.090 million tonnes of grain in April, Agriculture Minister Mykola said. Solskyi, this Monday (9).

He underlined the importance of Ukrainian grain exports via Romania while Russia is blocking Ukrainian ports, but said such exports could be complicated in two months by exports of the new wheat crop in Romania and Bulgaria.

“The seeding campaign is going on actively, despite the difficulties associated mainly with logistics,” Solskyi told a news conference.

He said that this year’s sowing did not have the same quality as last year and that the corn sowing area was smaller.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February increased volatility in international financial markets, pushing up commodity prices and affecting logistics.

Ukraine was the world’s fourth largest exporter of corn in the 2020/21 season and the sixth largest exporter of wheat, according to data from the International Grains Council.

Nearly 25 million tonnes of grain are trapped in Ukraine and unable to leave the country due to infrastructure problems and blocked ports on the Black Sea, a UN food agency official said on Friday.

Ukrainian agricultural officials say the exportable surplus is around 12 million tonnes and analysts have said Ukraine’s current large stockpiles will leave no room to store the new crop when it arrives.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the problem of global food security could not be solved without restoring Ukrainian agricultural production to the world market.
