Three people were killed and 31 wounded today in Russian shelling of the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, the regional governor said.
The mayor of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, said on the Telegram app that the shelling hit civilian infrastructure including a commercial property and a tire repair shop.
“These are places that had no military significance,” said Mayor Ihor Terekhov, who added that two children aged 4 and 16 were among the dozens of people taken to hospital.
“Many shells fell into the yards of houses. Garages and cars were also destroyed, many fires broke out,” said regional governor Oleh Sinekhubov.
In the early hours of today in a separate incident, a school was hit as well as a residential building, and rescuers rescued an 86-year-old woman from the rubble, he said. No deaths have been reported.
Valentina Popovichuk, a 74-year-old resident, described how she was rescued from the building.
“I woke up in bed, I was covered in dust. I went to the bathroom to wash and more debris and dust fell on me,” he said.
“I saw lights, the searchlights of the paramedics and I started shouting ‘I’m alive, get me out, please’. The paramedics came into the corridor, broke down the door and got me out.”
Russia, which invaded Ukraine on February 24, denies targeting civilians.
Kharkiv, located near the border with Russia, was heavily bombed in the initial phase of the war followed by a period of relative calm, but has been bombarded again in recent weeks.
