The head of the UN Department of Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, said today that she was concerned about reports of a new ceasefire violation in Ukraine in recent hours and called on all parties to show restraint.
“Whatever one thinks about the prospect of such a confrontation, the reality is that the current situation is extremely dangerous,” DiCarlo told the Security Council, which is discussing the situation in Ukraine, sounding the alarm as tensions between Russia and of its neighboring country is growing.
“We also call on all parties concerned to refrain from any unilateral action that could be contrary to the spirit and letter of the Minsk agreements or that would undermine their implementation and cause new tensions,” he said, urging everyone to turn to diplomacy for dispute resolution.
The Council meeting discussing the Minsk agreements took a dramatic turn as tensions in the region have not eased. The meeting is attended by ministers from Russia, the United States and Britain.
“There is no alternative to diplomacy,” DiCarlo insisted. “Ukraine’s national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders must be respected, in accordance with UN General Assembly resolutions,” he added.
The UN General Assembly will convene on February 23 to discuss Ukraine. According to diplomatic sources, many ministers are expected to attend the meeting.
