Ukraine: ‘Extremely difficult’ situation in Lisitsansk

The situation in Lisitsansk, in eastern Ukraine, is “extremely difficult” as “very heavy” shelling continues, making it impossible to evacuate civilians, the regional governor announced.

“There is a lot of shelling, from many directions. The Russian army is approaching Lisitsansk from different directions,” Serhi Gaidai said in a video posted on Telegram.

The governor said Russian forces remain “on the periphery” of the city and there is currently no street fighting. He also denied claims by pro-Russian separatists that they control half the city. Lisitsansk is across the river from Severodonetsk, which fell to the Russians last week.

According to Gaidai, the shelling is so strong that it is impossible to continue evacuating the city. There are still about 15,000 citizens left in Lisitsansk, out of the 100,000 it had before the war.

“We can only say that the Russians are too many and they are coming from all sides. There are an incredible number of vehicles and artillery,” he concluded.

Lisitsansk is the last major city not yet captured by the Russians in the Luhansk region, one of two regions in the Donbas basin that Moscow wants to bring under its full control.
