Ukrainian farmers have almost completed the spring sowing for this year, but the area is 22% less than in 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture announced today, without giving an exact number.
Ukraine plans to sow 142 million acres of spring crops by 2022, up from 169 million acres in 2021 due to the Russian invasion, the ministry said.
Official figures show that farmers sowed 1,893,000 acres of spring wheat, 9,284,000 acres of spring barley, 44.05 million acres of corn and some other staples.
The Ukrainian grain traders’ association UGA said the total area under spring wheat could be 1,900,000 hectares, 9,000,000 hectares of spring barley and 39 million hectares of corn.
The Ministry of Agriculture did not provide a forecast for the cultivation of cereals in 2022. It had announced that the sown area could be reduced by 20% this year due to fighting with Russian troops in many areas.
