Ukraine: ‘Fierce fighting’ rages ‘almost across’ Kherson region

“Fierce clashes” between Ukrainian forces and the Russian army are raging “in almost all” of the Russian-held Kherson region, where the Ukrainian army launched its counteroffensive, the Ukrainian presidency announced today.

“Powerful explosions were taking place all day (yesterday Monday) and all night in the Kherson region. Violent clashes are raging on almost the entire territory of the region,” the Ukrainian presidency pointed out in its morning briefing.

“The Ukrainian armed forces have launched their offensive in various directions,” the presidency continued, saying that “a number of ammunition depots” and “all major bridges” that allow vehicles to cross the Dnieper River have been destroyed.

Kyiv had announced yesterday that it had launched a counter-offensive to recapture this region in southern Ukraine, which Russia captured shortly after its invasion of the country in February. The goal is the recapture of the city of Kherson, which before the war had 280,000 inhabitants.

This region is of strategic importance as it borders Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Russia in March 2014.

Last night Moscow claimed it had “repelled” an “attempted attack” by Ukrainian forces in the Kherson and Mykolayiv regions of southern Ukraine, claiming it had inflicted “heavy blows” on Ukrainians.
