Ukraine today called on its allies to act quickly to prevent a possible invasion by Russia, saying an attack could happen “in the blink of an eye” at a time when the movement of Russian troops is worrying the West.
“It is better to act now than later” to “contain Russia,” Foreign Minister Dmitry Kouleba told a news conference.
According to Kuleba, Russia has gathered about 115,000 troops around Ukraine, in Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014, and in territories under separatist control. “What we are seeing is very serious. Russia has deployed a large military force near the Ukrainian border. It includes tanks, artillery, electronic warfare systems, air and naval forces,” he said.
In this context, a Russian attack could take place “literally in the blink of an eye”, the Ukrainian minister said.
In the event of an attack, Ukraine “will react”, he warned. “We are determined to defend our territory. Our country has become much more resilient and our army incomparably stronger than it was in 2014,” he assured.
In recent weeks, the United States, NATO and the European Union have repeatedly expressed concern about the movement of Russian forces around Ukraine. Russia, for its part, denies planning an attack and accuses Ukraine and its allies of multiplying the “challenges”.
