Former Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern recently announced that he was leaving his post at the Russian Railways RZD, calling it an “option without alternative”, as the Railways are now “part of the war organization”.
Social Democrat (SPÖ) Christian Kern, who previously headed the Austrian Railways before becoming involved in politics, had recently justified his position in the RZD by arguing that it was not a political activity. “Today, however, I informed the bodies of the Joint Stock Company Russian Railways RDZ that I am resigning immediately from my position on the Board of Directors, because the RZD has now become part of the Russian military organization. I am deeply sorry about that, but due to the facts, there was no alternative. My thoughts are with the victims of this irrational aggression.
Another former Austrian chancellor, Wolfgang Sussel (ÖVP), has been on the board of the Russian oil company Lukoil for years. The day before yesterday, his spokesman had stated that he saw no reason to resign, as the company is not state-owned and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
