Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has been barred from attending a NATO summit in Lithuania as he was barred from leaving the country, according to his party’s parliamentary group.
According to Reuters, Poroshenko was stopped twice at a border crossing with Poland.
Ukrainian media reported that Poroshenko could not cross the border due to “technical problems” with the permit to leave the country.
“Poroshenko had received all the official permits to leave the country and was included in the official delegation of the Ukrainian Parliament for this event,” his parliamentary group said.
Poroshenko was scheduled to hold a series of high-level meetings in Vilnius, including with Lithuanian President Gitana Nauseda. He was also scheduled to attend a meeting of the European People’s Party in Rotterdam, it is reported.
In January, Poroshenko won a court ruling that allowed him to remain free while he is being investigated for treason. He sees in this investigation a politically motivated attack linked to allies of his successor, President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Poroshenko is being investigated for financing Russian-backed separatists in the east of the country through illegal coal sales in 2014-2015.
