Ukraine: General Staff talks about territorial gains near Kharkov

LAST UPDATE: 08.05

The Ukrainian military recorded ground gains in the area around Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city, the general staff said via Facebook on Wednesday. Ukrainian troops liberated the village of Dementievka, near the border with Russia, advancing on the northern part of the region. At the same time, fighting is ongoing in the village of Dovchenke, about 25 km from Slovyansk, in eastern Ukraine.

Heavy fighting has also been reported around the cities of Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdivka and near Severodonetsk in the Luhansk region, according to the Ukrainian General Staff. Although the Air Force has provided close support to Russian ground forces, there have been no Russian territorial gains in the region, Ukrainian officials have said.

Ukrainian forces bomb Russia’s Kursk region, killing a civilian

Ukrainian forces bombed a village in Russia, near the border between the two warring states, in the western region of Kursk, early this morning, killing at least one civilian, local government official Roman Staravit said.

An alcoholic beverage factory and several other buildings in the village of Tiotkino were affected, Starawitt said via the Telegram platform.

President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares to extend martial law

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky intends to extend martial law and conscription for at least another three months, documents released Wednesday show as Ukraine continues to resist Russian military incursions.

Support for Verkhovna Rada (“Supreme Council”, the Ukrainian parliament) is taken for granted. The martial law is therefore expected to be extended until at least August 23, the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day. Martial law was imposed on February 24, hours after the start of the Russian invasion; since then, the measure has been extended for thirty days at a time. Some observers see its duration as an indication of how much Kyiv expects hostilities to continue.

Ten civilians dead in Donetsk

At least ten Ukrainian civilians, including two children, were killed by Russian forces in the Donetsk region on Wednesday, local government chief Pavlo Kirilenko said, without elaborating. Seven other civilians were injured, the governor added.

Evacuations of Mariupol

Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that a total of 959 Ukrainian soldiers, including 80 wounded, had laid down their arms and surrendered to Azovstal in Mariupol since May 16. The Ukrainian president said on Tuesday that the negotiation process with Russia for the evacuation of the last soldiers from the region continues.

Russia admits it is facing “difficulties” but insists the “special military operation” will continue until the goals are achieved.

A Russian official acknowledged on Wednesday that the Russian military was having trouble making mistakes in what the Kremlin called a “special military operation” in Ukraine, but assured that the war would continue until Moscow achieved its goals.

“Despite the difficulties, the special military operation will continue until the end,” said Rashid Nurgaliyev, deputy secretary of Russia’s National Security Council, despite arms deliveries from the West to Ukraine.

The “special military operation” – a legally imposed term in Russia, which prohibits the use of terms such as “war” or “invasion” – will continue until the “demilitarization and demilitarization” of Ukraine and until the protection of the (self-proclaimed) Laity is ensured. “Danetsk and Lugansk republics,” he insisted.
