Germany has not seen any indication that Russia has withdrawn troops from the border area of Ukraine and Moscow must do so urgently to de-escalate the situation, otherwise it will face dire consequences, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said today.
Russia’s Defense Ministry announced yesterday that its forces are withdrawing after exercises near the Ukraine but a senior Biden government official said the United States did not believe in Russia.
Lambrecht demanded a substantial withdrawal.
“We have not seen this yet and we are waiting for that,” he told reporters as he attended a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. “So far it is only words, not deeds”, he added, as broadcast by international agencies and relayed by the Athenian News Agency.
“(The actions) must be followed urgently and all one can do is make an urgent appeal to Russia: contribute to de-escalation. “Otherwise, there will be really severe economic and political consequences,” he said.
“Warning” about Mali
The German minister also appeared “cautious” about extending the mission of German troops to Malifollowing the announcement of the withdrawal of French troops.
“We have been informed of France’s decision to leave Mali and end its commitment there. Germany, which has been involved in Mali through two missions of the United Nations and the European Union.
