Ukraine’s grain exports fell 43% year-on-year to 1.41 million tonnes in June, the country’s agriculture ministry said on Friday, Reuters reported, highlighting the damage caused to a key sector of the economy by Russia’s invasion.
Nevertheless, grain exports for the 2021-22 period ending June 30 rose 8.5% to 48.5 million tonnes on strong shipments ahead of the February 24 invasion, the data showed.
Ukraine’s grain exports have plummeted since the start of the war as Black Sea ports – the main transport route – have been largely blocked, driving up global food prices and sparking fears of shortages in Africa and Middle East
Ministry data showed wheat exports rose to 18.7 million tonnes in 2021/22 from 16.6 million tonnes a year earlier.
Corn exports rose to 23.5 million tons from 23.1 million tons, while barley sales rose to about 5.8 million tons from 4.2 million tons.
The government has said Ukraine could muster up to 65 million tonnes of grain and oilseeds this year, up from 106 million in 2021, due to land lost to Russian forces and lower grain yields.
