Ukraine: ‘Green light’ from the Parliament to the appointment of the new attorney general

The Parliament of Ukraine today approved the appointment of MP Andriy Kostin as the country’s Prosecutor General, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced.

Two hundred and ninety-nine MPs out of a total of 450 approved Kostin’s appointment, the Telegram messaging app said.

Kostin is a member of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party. The president had earlier appointed Kostin to replace Irina Verediktova, who was removed as prosecutor general earlier this month.

Parliament formally fired Benediktova and Internal Security Service chief Ivan Bakanov on July 19, two days after Zelensky suspended them accusing them of failing to root out Russian spies from their services after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

After that vote, the head of the ruling party’s parliamentary group and a close ally of Zelensky, David Arahamia, wrote on Telegram that Venediktova “remains in the group,” and hinted that she was going to take up some diplomatic post.
