Ukraine: Hackers target Belarus railway network, Russian telecommunications infrastructure

Ukraine’s “technological army” of hacker volunteers announced today a series of new targets, including Belarus’s railway network and Russia’s GLONASS satellite geolocation system. “We need to mobilize and intensify our efforts as much as possible,” the IT army said in a Telegram post.

The post lists the top priorities of the teams, such as Belarus Railways, Russian telecommunications companies and GLONASS, the Russian equivalent of GPS.

Kyiv has called on hackers to help protect critical infrastructure and launch cyber-espionage missions against Russian troops, the Ters news agency reported. Kyiv announced the creation of this “IT Army” on Saturday.

A Belarusian hacker group, the Belarusian Cyber Partisans, said on Tuesday that it had shut down the country’s rail network because it had been used to transport Russian troops.

Russia has called the war in Ukraine a “special operation”, saying the aim was not to seize territory but to destroy the military capabilities of its neighbor and to capture those it deemed “dangerous nationalists”.
