Ukraine, half of the country’s children are fleeing

Over half of the children living in Ukraine had to flee. The data comes from the UNICEF executive director Catherine Russell. Of the 7.5 million children residing in Ukraine, 4.3 million have been forced to leave their homes: 1.8 million have found refuge abroad and 2.5 million are internally displaced. This conflict caused “one of the fastest large-scale displacements of children since World War II”.

Since February 24, the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 128 children were killed according to the Attorney General’s Office of Ukraine on its Telegram channel. Local media injured are 172. In Kharkiv alone the victims among children are 15. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry then tells of 2,389 children taken by force to Russia. They were in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions and allegedly were “forcibly relocated” after being separated from their parents or after being orphaned. There are online lists of people of whom there is no news, including children with name, age, photo.

Unicef ​​recalls that children fleeing war are often victims of trafficking and exploitation, they are at higher risk than others. 28% of the identified victims of trafficking globally are children.
