Ukraine hands over 50 troops to Russia in exchange for prisoners of war

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Ukraine handed over 50 captured Russian servicemen on Thursday in the latest prisoner exchange between the two countries.

Earlier the same day, the top official installed by the Russian government in Ukraine’s partially occupied Donetsk region said that Moscow and Kiev would each hand over 50 prisoners of war.

Russia said it would send those freed to Moscow for medical examinations and rehabilitation.

Open to negotiations

Also on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the United States and NATO of playing a direct and dangerous role in the war.

Even though he was critical of the West during most of his speech, Lavrov stressed that Russia is open to the possibility of negotiations, both with Ukraine and the US.
