The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has banned 13 foreign journalists from producing “commissioned material for Kremlin propagandists” since the start of the Russian invasion in late February.
“In their provocative articles, they published misinformation about the situation on the front and defamed the Ukrainian army,” the agency said in a statement today.
The entry ban is initially valid for three years.
In one case, a Dutch journalist was deported after posting photos of a rocket depot in Odessa hit by rockets. The ban was extended to 10 years after the Dutch journalist tried to re-enter the country.
When the war broke out, authorities imposed strict rules on the publication of images of political and military targets hit by Russian military forces.
Censorship under martial law also prohibits journalistic coverage of the movements and positions of the Ukrainian army.
Foreign journalists also face charges of espionage in addition to deportation for violations.
The SBU also announced the arrest of critics of the Ukrainian government, including Odessa journalist Yuri Tkachev. He has been in custody for almost two months for allegedly illegal possession of weapons.
