The state operator of the Ukrainian electricity grid announced on Tuesday (14) that emergency power cuts are being introduced following a series of devastating Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
Emergency shutdowns across Ukraine were implemented from 9pm to midnight local time on Tuesday, according to Ukrenergo.
“Significant” energy shortages worsened as people used more energy during the recent cold, Ukrenergo added.
Moscow intensified efforts to cripple Ukraine's energy system last month as Ukrainian troops struggle to hold positions on the main front lines, especially in the east.
On May 8, Russian forces carried out a “massive” missile attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, targeting power generation and transmission facilities in the Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsia regions.
Ukraine's largest energy company, DTEK, said Russian missiles hit three of its thermal power plants on May 8, adding that it was the fifth time its infrastructure had been targeted in the past six weeks.
