An agreement was reached to try to evacuate civilians trapped in Ukrainian towns and cities through nine “humanitarian corridors” on Wednesday, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said.
Signaling that no agreement had been reached with Russia to establish a safe corridor in the heart of Mariupol, she said people wishing to leave the besieged port city would find transport in the vicinity of Berdyansk.
One of the regions with the planned evacuation of civilians is the Luhansk province, recognized as independent by Russia in eastern Ukraine.
The region’s governor said an agreement had been reached on a local ceasefire to evacuate civilians trapped by the fighting. Sergey Gaidal announced the determination by Telegram, and added that the truce starts at 9 am local time (4 am GMT).
“Heads up!! A humanitarian corridor has been agreed: residents of Rubizhne, Lysychansk, Severodonetsk, Hirska Community will be evacuated today,” Gadai wrote.
