Artillery shells exploded early today in central, northern and western Donetsk, the largest city in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, a Russian news agency TASS reported.
According to the agency, heavy artillery is being used against the city and the attack is ongoing.
Earlier, pro-Russian separatist authorities spoke of Ukrainian army shelling of several communities in the Donetsk People’s Republic.
The situation in eastern Ukraine took a turn for the worse this week. Authorities in the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk have spoken of the heaviest Ukrainian artillery bombardment in months and heavy damage to political infrastructure.
The day before yesterday, pro-Russian leaders in the two regions, Leonid Pasetsnik and Denis Pushilin, announced that they were beginning to transport civilians to Russian territory due to the escalation of hostilities. Yesterday Saturday, both announced that they are declaring a “general mobilization”, calling on all those who can carry weapons to report to military offices.
