Ukraine hopes to evacuate civilians hiding in a steel mill on Friday with the last fighters defending the southern city of Mariupol.
“An operation is planned today to remove civilians from the plant,” said President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office, without elaborating.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said after meeting Zelensky in Kiev on Thursday that intense discussions were under way to allow the evacuation of the Azovstal steelworks, which is under constant pressure from Russian forces occupying Mariupol. .
On Tuesday (26), Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed “in principle” to the involvement of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross in the evacuation of the factory.
The Mariupol city council said around 100,000 residents across the city are “in mortal danger” because of Russian bombing and unsanitary conditions, and described a “catastrophic” shortage of drinking water and food.
