Ukraine: Human Rights Watch calls for investigation into ‘war crimes’ against Russian prisoners

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has asked Ukrainian authorities to investigate whether “war crimes” have been committed against Russian prisoners, following the release of images showing Ukrainian soldiers shooting them in the leg.

A video released March 27 shows gunmen throwing three men in camouflage uniforms with their hands tied behind their backs to the ground from a van and then shooting them in the legs.

Although the authenticity of the video has not been confirmed by an independent source, AFP was able to confirm that it was filmed in the village of Mala Rogan in Kharkiv Oblast, which was recaptured earlier this week by Ukrainian forces.

AFP reporters went to Mala Rogan on March 28 and saw the bodies of two Russian soldiers in one of the village squares, most of which had been destroyed by fighting, while at least two other bodies had been dumped in wells.

“If confirmed, the shooting of soldiers on foot and their beating is a war crime,” HRW said in a statement issued Thursday night.

“Ukraine must show that it is capable and willing to prevent and punish serious violations of international humanitarian law,” the group added.

Alexei Arestovich, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, had admitted to the Telegram that the abuse of prisoners of war was a “war crime” and added that such acts would be punished.

On the part of Alexander Bastrykin, director of the Russian Commission of Inquiry, he called for an investigation into the alleged violations.
