Ukraine’s request to be admitted as a member of the European Union and the protests around the world against the Russian invasion are some of the highlights of the afternoon of this Monday, February 28, 2022.

Ukraine request

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the European Union to urgently admit Ukraine as a member of the bloc of European countries. The president thanked partner nations for their support, but said Ukraine’s goal is to be equal to all Europeans.

US sanctions against Russia

The United States has banned transactions by Americans with the Russian central bank, the National Wealth Fund of the Russian Federation and the Russian Ministry of Finance. The intention is to limit Vladimir Putin’s funding for attacks in Ukraine.

Russia’s currency fell to a record low against the dollar. The currency’s collapse prompted the Russian central bank to re-implement emergency measures, including a big hike in interest rates from 9.5% to 20%.

banned airlines

Russia has banned airlines from 36 countries from flying into the country. The move is in retaliation for Western countries, which have also closed airspace to the Russians.

Protests against the war
