Ukraine: Information on heavy fire on the outskirts of Kiev overnight

Heavy fire from various parts of the Ukrainian capital was reported in the early hours of today, following a warning from the country’s president who said he expected the Russian army to attack Kiev overnight.

The Ukrainian military says it has repulsed an attack by Russian troops on a Ukrainian base west of Kiev overnight, about seven kilometers from the city center.

Photos show fire on the spot, while videos uploaded on social media show gunshots.

Earlier in the night, Russian troops reportedly attempted to attack a power plant northeast of the city on the right bank of the Dnieper River. Battles are still reported in the northern Ondon area.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on residents of the capital to defend the city. Russian troops are coming to Kiev from the northwest and northeast.

Zelensky’s spokeswoman Sergei Nikiforov said late Friday that the Kiev leadership was in contact with Moscow for possible talks, but that Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had said that decision to date.

Russia had previously accepted Zelensky’s proposal for talks, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov calling it a step in the right direction. Russia considers that the capital of Belarus, Minsk, would be the ideal meeting place.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Sijiatro has suggested hosting the talks in his home country. Both sides received an invitation and said they were considering the proposal, a spokesman in Budapest said.
