Ukraine-Irpin: Dead American journalist

LAST UPDATE: 17.30

An American journalist was killed and another was wounded by gunfire today in Irpin, northwest of Kiev, where Ukrainian forces are fighting against Russian troops, the French Agency reported, citing converging sources.

The two men were hit by a car while traveling with a Ukrainian citizen, who was also injured, Danilo Sapovalov, a doctor assisting Ukrainian forces who took care of the victims, told AFP.

Ukrainian authorities soon accused their Russian enemies of firing on journalists, but according to AFP, the origin of the fire is difficult to determine at this time.

French Agency reporters, who were at the scene today, heard artillery and lighter fire.

An AFP reporter saw the body of the slain journalist, who had his identification documents with him, including an accreditation from the New York Times.

It is about 50-year-old Brent Renod, photojournalist and director, the American newspaper clarified in an announcement. He worked for the New York Times in the past, but did not work for it in Ukraine, according to the announcement.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Brad Renod’s death. Brad was a talented photographer and filmmaker who had contributed to the New York Times over the years,” the Times said in a statement posted on Twitter by a spokesman.

“Although he had contributed to the Times in the past (most recently in 2015), he had not undertaken a mission in Ukraine,” it said. “The first reports that he worked for the Times came out because he was wearing a Times press release issued for a mission many years ago.”

He is the first foreign journalist to die since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The other American journalist, who apparently has been slightly injured, described, for his part, what he experienced, in a video he posted on social media.
