Ukraine has asked Bulgaria to repair some of its heavy military equipment at its arms factories, Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov said after a meeting in Kyiv today with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Bulgaria, a member of the European Union and NATO, has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine but has not yet decided whether to send military aid to Kyiv, as one of the ruling coalition parties disagrees.
“It is a sincere request, which I myself will present to the ruling coalition, and I hope that next week, when we will vote in parliament on military-technical assistance to Ukraine, it will be a key part of this package,” Petkov said. speaking to reporters in Kyiv.
Petkov’s main PP party and two other allies in the ruling coalition agree to provide military assistance to Ukraine, but the fourth party, the Socialists, sees this as a direct involvement in the conflict. The Socialists also disagree with imposing sanctions on Russia.
The Bulgarian parliament is expected to approve the sending of some form of aid to Ukraine, with the votes of some opposition parties.
