Ukraine will double the number of border guards on its border with Belarus to prevent any attempts by migrants to enter the country illegally, Interior Minister Denis Monastirsky said today.
Immigrants trapped in Belarus made multiple attempts to enter Poland – an EU member state – overnight, Warsaw said today, announcing it had strengthened its border with additional forces.
Ukraine, which is not a member state of the Union, has a 1,084 km long border with Belarus.
Monastirski said the National Guard and police would be involved in strengthening border guards.
“Mobile groups … will move along the border to detect illegal border crossings,” he told a news conference after the end of a meeting of the Ukrainian Security and Defense Council chaired by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Council Secretary Oleski Danilov said earlier today that the situation on Poland’s border with Belarus was the main topic of the meeting.
