European Commission leader Ursula von der Leyen said in an interview with CNN that Ukraine “is one of us and should join the European Union”.
“It’s not just a fight between Ukraine and Russia, it’s democracy versus autocracy. And that’s why, for us [UE] it is existential to be able to support Ukraine in every way possible”.
Von der Leyen said the EU is already implementing sanctions “with extraordinary determination and speed under Russia”.
According to her, the EU hopes that it will be impossible for Putin to continue to finance his wars. “It is important that we become independent from Russian fossil fuels. It is important that we have a strategic approach so that we can accelerate our investment in renewable energy,” she says.
Asked about the attacks on humanitarian corridors, von der Leyen said it was important to have a “very clear inquiry and investigation into this aspect”.
According to her, it is necessary not only to have political agreements, but also for information to reach the military who are in loco. “It might take a day or two, but we’re all focused on it,” he says.
