Russian forces attacked the center of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, with a guided bomb, killing one person, wounding eight and setting buildings and vehicles on fire, officials said.
Mayor Ihor Terekhov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said the bomb hit the city center, sparking a fire. He put the death toll at one, with an 8-month-old child among the injured.
Regional governor Oleh Synehubov said a post office was on fire. Emergency services were examining the area.
Kharkiv, located about 30 km from the Russian border, has been a frequent target of Russian attacks in the war but remained out of Russian reach in the initial phases of the invasion of Moscow in February 2022. Russian forces increasingly rely on guided bombs in their attacks.
Russian forces launched an incursion into the Kharkiv region last month and captured several villages, but Ukrainian authorities say the situation near the border has stabilized.
