Schools in Kyiv will reopen on September 1 and classes will be taught in the presence of students, authorities in the Ukrainian capital announced today.
Schools, which went online after the Russian invasion that began on February 24, are currently closed for the summer school holidays.
The most important task at the start of the new school year is to ensure the safety of students and teachers,” Olena Fitanyan, head of the education and science sector in Kyiv municipality, said in a statement.
The perimeter of the buildings will be checked to rule out the presence of explosive devices and air raid shelters inside the schools will be supplied with water, medicine and other basic necessities.
“At the start of the new school year, all schools will organize necessary training seminars for teachers and students on what to do in the event of an airstrike alert,” Fidanian said.
Students who cannot return to Kyiv will be able to continue their studies online,” he clarified.
Russian forces, after trying for weeks in vain to approach Kyiv, turned to the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.
Hundreds of thousands of residents then returned to the capital, where life is gradually returning to normal as restaurants and shops reopen. However, a missile strike on a residential building in June killed one person and injured several others in Kyiv.
