Latvia, a Baltic country that is a member of NATO and the EU, has said it needs to prepare for “potential security risks” following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Latvia is safe, we do not pose a direct military threat,” the Latvian Foreign Ministry said today.
“However, Latvia must be prepared for potential security risks – unpredictable refugee flows, cyber-attacks, fake news attacks, energy challenges,” he added.
The country will also relocate its embassy to Ukraine from Kiev to Lviv.
Meanwhile, 40 US troops arrived in Latvia early today from Italy, the first of a group of more than 300 troops expected to be deployed in the country, the Latvian Ministry of Defense said.
The troops, which will be stationed at the Andaji military base outside the capital Riga, arrived in the country today shortly after midnight before the Russian offensive in Ukraine began.
