Lithuanian President Gitana Nauseda said tonight that the European Union should impose the toughest possible sanctions on Russia and give Ukraine “a much more transparent and visible way” to become a member of the bloc.
Arriving at the emergency EU summit after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Nauseda said: “This is a completely inappropriate act of aggression. Unfortunately, we did not succeed, we were not strong enough to prevent Russia from doing so the step”.
“And this is a tragedy for Ukraine, for Europe and for Russia itself. We can not afford to be a forum for discussion. I still believe in the EU’s ability to prevent such actions in the middle of Europe.”
“Tomorrow may be too late,” he concluded.
