French President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks “within the next few hours” with German Chancellor Olaf Soltz and US President Joe Biden on the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the Elysee said shortly after the French leader had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
Macron may also hold talks with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, as well as “other close partners”, the French presidency added.
Earlier, the Elysee reported that Macron and Putin had agreed to “intensify diplomatic efforts” to preserve peace.
According to the Russian agency Tass, they were in favor of a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine. “The two leaders will take all necessary measures to prevent escalation, reduce risks and preserve peace,” he added, citing a statement from the French presidency.
The phone call between Macron and Putin lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes and immediately afterwards the French president spoke for an hour with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Russian and French Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov and Jean-Yves Le Drian will have a telephone conversation tomorrow, Monday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed.
Macron and Putin also agreed to convene a Tripartite Contact Group (TRG) tomorrow, involving Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE.
