The city of Sloviansk, the next target of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, is under “massive” shelling, the city’s mayor said today, urging residents to seek shelter.
“Slovyansk! Massive shelling of the city. The center, the north. Protect yourself,” Vadim Liach, the pre-war mayor of this city of about 100,000, said on Facebook.
Russian forces bombed a market in Sloviansk, killing one woman and wounding at least three other people, according to local police.
A Reuters reporter at the scene saw yellow smoke billowing from an auto parts store and flames engulfing rows of market stalls as firefighters battled the blaze.
It was not immediately known what type of ammunition was used in the attack on the city, which is located in the Donetsk region.
Police said it was unclear how many people were in the market at the time of the attack, but noted that the market was closing at the time, with some shops still open.
Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly called on civilians remaining in the city to leave the area, as the front line is now just a few kilometers away after the Russian army captured the cities of Severodonetsk and Lysihansk.
At least six people have been killed and 19 others injured since Sunday in shelling in Sloviansk, which sparked fires.
Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, a regional administrative center still under Ukrainian control, are the next targets for Russian forces, who are continuing their offensive to take control of the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.
In 2014, Sloviansk was for several months under the control of pro-Russian separatists fighting alongside forces from Moscow during their conflict against Ukrainian forces.
