The adviser to the Ukrainian president and peace negotiator Mikhail Pontoliak said that no agreement could be trusted with Russia and that Moscow could only stop its invasion by force, according to Reuters.
“Any agreement with Russia is not worth a penny,” Podolyak wrote in the Telegram messaging app. “Is it possible to negotiate with a country that always lies cynically and propagandistically?”
Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the breakdown of peace talks, with the latest known face-to-face talks on March 29. The Kremlin said earlier this month that Ukraine had shown no willingness to resume peace talks, while officials in Kyiv blamed Russia for the lack of progress.
On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that President Vladimir Putin was the only Russian official with whom he was willing to meet to discuss how to end the war.
Putin says Russian forces are in a special operation to demilitarize Ukraine and rid it of radical anti-Russian nationalists. Ukraine and its allies call this a false pretext for invading Ukraine on February 24.
“Russia has proven to be a barbaric country that threatens global security,” Podoliak said. “A barbarian can only stop by violence.”
