Ukraine Ministry Calls Melitopol Mayor’s ‘Kidnapping’ a War Crime

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a strong-worded statement on Facebook, calling the detention of the mayor of Melitopol by gunmen a “war crime”.

THE CNN previously reported that Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov was seen on video being led away from a government building in the city by gunmen. A short time later, the Russian-backed Luhansk regional prosecutor alleged that Fedorov had committed terrorism crimes and was under investigation.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called Fedorov’s detention a “kidnapping”, saying it was one of many “gross violations of norms and principles of international law, including international humanitarian law, war crimes”. and crimes against humanity, as well as other human rights violations by the Russian military.”

Itamaraty said the Geneva Convention and its Additional Protocols forbid civilian hostages like Fedorov from being taken.

“We urge the international community to respond immediately to the kidnapping of Ivan Fedorov and other civilians, and to increase pressure on Russia to end its barbaric war against the Ukrainian people,” the statement said.

“The fact of the kidnapping of the mayor of Melitopol, along with hundreds of other war crimes committed by Russian occupiers on Ukrainian soil, are being carefully documented by law enforcement agencies. The perpetrators of this and other crimes will be held to the strictest responsibility,” the post concluded.
