In war there are women who run away, who walk day and night with only their children in their arms. There are women who mourn their children who died under the bombs. There are women raped, beaten, victims of violence in their country and in those where they are welcomed. The government of Kiev has denounced the increase in increasingly atrocious violence suffered by Ukrainian women in the territories occupied by Russian soldiers.
According to reports from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, in Mariupol a woman was raped for six days in front of her five-year-old son. She and she died of their injuries. “This is not a horror movie. Rape, violence, murder: this is what the Russian world means “reads the post published on social media by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.

The Attorney General of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova denounced how a woman was raped near Kyev after her husband, an unarmed civilian, was killed by the Russian military. Women in war often become “a booty” to be stolen from the enemy, an extra piece to be conquered. We have seen it in Syria, Yemen, Burma, Nigeria, Somalia, Congo, we see it today in Ukraine and we have seen it recently in Afghanistan, where the return of the Taliban regime and therefore of the deepest violence, last August, crushed once again especially women, forced into forced marriages, often fleeing only with the clothes they wore, relegated to life at home, away from sport, music, work, away from school, still prohibited for middle school girls and above.
Rape in war (condemned by the Geneva Conventions as a crime against humanity and war crimes) was used as a real weapon. It happened in Bosnia in 1992 and in Rwanda in 1994.
Today, the victims we see most closely are Ukrainian women. On the run alone, yes victims of offers of free housing or work in exchange for sexual favors or ads on Tinder, happens in Poland, in Romania also in Italy. It is enough to join one of the numerous groups born on social networks to offer help to the Ukrainian population and to notice that the dangerous ads are there. The organizations present along the Ukrainian borders denounced this and various realities also report it in Italy. This is how war and conflict affect women, making them even more vulnerable.
